Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain

Today we made the drive to Lake Placid. The last time I was here was for the 1980 Olympic trials for the ski jump. I remember being here with my parents, my Aunt Carol and Uncle Bill and my sister Kris and our cousins. They were jumping from the 70m ski jump, the shorter of the two and I remember being in awe of how far and how high they were going!

So, we had to go to the top of the 90m jump today! It was raining when we got to the top but it soon stopped and we were able to walk around on top a little. See the pictures above - it's a very scary thought that someone has the nerve to get on this thing with two boards strapped to their feet! And you can't see the landing zone until you've left the jump and flown for a bit!

Whiteface Mountain next. We drove up the Veteran's Memorial Highway which was commissioned by President Franklin Roosevelt. The road up is steep and rough and they told us at the bottom that visibility at the top was zero. The girls wanted to go though and we thought maybe the clouds would clear out a bit.

We really lucked out! Not only did the clouds clear out but the sun came out, too! To get to the top you have to go through a long tunnel into the mountain and take an elevator up to the summit. Cold, wet, brrr! Once on top it's pretty open with a lack of guard railings and warning signs that was refreshing in the USA. Europeans are always remarking to me that we have warning signs on everything!

The highlight for Anne was the Weather Observatory at the summit. Couldn't get in though! The girls walked around the top and came closer to the edges than I liked!

Then back to Lake Placid to walk around a bit and stop in the chocolate store for a snack. I went into the Harley Davidson shop to get Scott a t-shirt but they didn't have any shirts larger than medium - that won't do! Maybe we'll get a chance to go back before we leave...

Now, a little ice cream trip and more Olympics! Go USA!
