We're in Boston!

After the long drive down yesterday Ken Patterson and I are in Boston visiting the Molongoski's! We're about to go meet a guy to get Red Sox tickets for tonight. I think he knows a guy whose brother knows a guy who had tickets for sale... Anyway, hopefully we'll be there and I'll post some shots here tonight or tomorrow.

If we don't come back from the meet I bequeath my D3 to Shannon as long as she joins the photography club at school! Love you Shannon!

On another note - I thought NY drivers were bad. I think I found some worse drivers here! And where are all the street signs?!?

Julia's 9 Month (ok, 10 month) Portraits!

Ann, Charlie, Julia, and Charlie's parents, Bill and Diane, invited us down to their Loon Lake cottage in the Southern Tier for Julia's 9 Month Portraits and dinner! We had a wonderful time and the weather was terrific!

These are some of the best people I have ever met and they must know now that I will be calling them often to keep up with Julia as she grows! Shannon had a good time playing with Julia and then swimming and doing a little tubing on the lake.

The theme we are working towards with these images is what Scott and I like to call "The Evolution of Julia"! We have been creating new images every three months with the plan of putting together a single portrait with one from each quarter on it! It's going to be tremendously difficult to choose which images get used in that portrait as there are so many great shots!

Once again Julia was a little doll! She is just starting to crawl around and makes the cutest little sounds! I can't wait for grandchildren! There are so many great images from this day that I'm having trouble picking my favorites but here's a small sampling! Enjoy them!

PS - On a more personal note, my daughter, Shannon, who is going to be a Freshman in High School in a week, made the Varsity swim team at Brockport High School, swimming a 27.8 second 50 yard sprint! Congratulations, Shannon! Mom and I love you very much!

Josh's Senior Portraits

Hi! Haven't posted for a while due to busy-ness! How about that - I made anew word!

Anyway, Josh is Alicia Odrzywolski's brother and he's getting ready to become a Senior! Josh runs cross country at Brockport High School and is good enough to have made the Empire State Games this year! Congratualtions, Josh!

Anne and I have known Josh's mom and their family for quite a while now and you couldn't ask for better friends. Alicia, of course, is our daughter Wendy's best friend and Josh was in Alicia and Dan's wedding this past month! So that means that he has been subjected to our cameras twice in one month! Poor guy!

We started at the Holley Waterfall, made our way to Josh's Uncle Trevor's house on Gallup Road, and finished at Gary and Wanda's for the studio setup! Long night and well outside the normal time we would normally shoot for but, what the heck! Lots of great images!

So, here's one for the yearbook! Enjoy it!

Veena and Gopal

Well, back from vacation and right back into it! Scott and I had the pleasure of photographing Veena and Gopal's final wedding reception at Steamboat Landing on Canandaigua Lake Saturday night. What a wonderful party! The variation of color and texture that comes with traditional Indian dress is phenomenal for a photographer!

We arrived with plenty of time beforehand to make some images of Veena and Gopal and their family. All in all it was a great situation for us - terrific models, great location, and perfect light! Veena and Gopal are both very relaxed and easy to work with, of course, after three engagement parties and two wedding receptions they were well prepared!

We also ran into people we already knew - Pooja Rao and her parents were there (we are photographing Pooja's wedding next year), and Venkat and Shoba Purushotham (we did their daughter Shanti's senior portriats last year).

So, we had lots of fun and made a lot of great images! Here's one to whet your appetite! Enjoy!

Some More Smores...

Today turned out to be a beautiful day weather wise! We spent the morning lounging around, reading, playing cards, etc. Then we drove a bit and went for a short one hour hike near Fish Pond! It turns out that Hunter is so sweet that the mosquitoes swarm to her! Every time we stopped it seemed that she was doing the dance - trying to keep from getting stung. So we kept moving and got back to the car!

A short trip in to Saranac Lake to get more milk - the girls drink it like crazy! Back home to shower, play some more cards and read. Then cooking burgers on the grill and corn on the cob for dinner - yum!

They have had so much rain here that the firewood outside is really damp. It took a lot of lighter fluid to get the fire going enough to get it dried out! Then more smores. I think I am smored out now!

Tomorrow looks like it might be a washout with more rain and thunderstorms forecasted. Might just read all day! Home on Saturday in time to do Veena and Gopal's wedding reception at Steamboat Landing!

Here's some images from today that Shannon and Hunter picked as their favorites! Enjoy!

Rainy Day Blues

After staying up late last night watching the USA girls get the silver medal in the team gymnastics everyone slept in this morning. Anne got up first and made coffee and sausage and started in on pancakes! Very industrious! By the time we ate and sat around a little it had started to sprinkle, eventually evolving into a downpour. Four people stuck in the house with nothing to do...

The rain finally let up and we decided to drive back to Lake Placid - just because. On the way back we stopped and ate dinner at Tail O' The Pup, the local clambake and ribs place. I wouldn't recommend it. Expensive price, so so food, indifferent service.

We started to make our way back home as the sun was setting, turned the corner onto Route 86 and spotted the horses up on the hill in the golden sunlight! I got Anne to stop the car and went up a ways to get some shots. The horses must have thought that I was bringing food because the three mares came running down to greet me! They were all pretty small - only about 5 feet at the withers - and one girl was very friendly! Made me wish I had a carrot or two for treats!

Back in the car... We had a great looking sunset coming so we zipped home and I grabbed my gear and walked down to the edge of Hoel Pond. I stayed until it was too dark to see. The last shot I attempted was this shot of the drift wood poking up out of the water. I tried to shine a flashlight on them but still couldn't be sure I was focused! It came out pretty well though!

Thanks, Anne, for bringing me the flashlight! It would have been a tough walk back in the pitch dark! Love you!

Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain

Today we made the drive to Lake Placid. The last time I was here was for the 1980 Olympic trials for the ski jump. I remember being here with my parents, my Aunt Carol and Uncle Bill and my sister Kris and our cousins. They were jumping from the 70m ski jump, the shorter of the two and I remember being in awe of how far and how high they were going!

So, we had to go to the top of the 90m jump today! It was raining when we got to the top but it soon stopped and we were able to walk around on top a little. See the pictures above - it's a very scary thought that someone has the nerve to get on this thing with two boards strapped to their feet! And you can't see the landing zone until you've left the jump and flown for a bit!

Whiteface Mountain next. We drove up the Veteran's Memorial Highway which was commissioned by President Franklin Roosevelt. The road up is steep and rough and they told us at the bottom that visibility at the top was zero. The girls wanted to go though and we thought maybe the clouds would clear out a bit.

We really lucked out! Not only did the clouds clear out but the sun came out, too! To get to the top you have to go through a long tunnel into the mountain and take an elevator up to the summit. Cold, wet, brrr! Once on top it's pretty open with a lack of guard railings and warning signs that was refreshing in the USA. Europeans are always remarking to me that we have warning signs on everything!

The highlight for Anne was the Weather Observatory at the summit. Couldn't get in though! The girls walked around the top and came closer to the edges than I liked!

Then back to Lake Placid to walk around a bit and stop in the chocolate store for a snack. I went into the Harley Davidson shop to get Scott a t-shirt but they didn't have any shirts larger than medium - that won't do! Maybe we'll get a chance to go back before we leave...

Now, a little ice cream trip and more Olympics! Go USA!

Swimming and Smores

Today started a bit late as the girls slept in while Anne and I had coffee and read a bit. After breakfast we went for a short hike and then Shannon and Hunter wanted to go for a swim in the pond. So we walked down and they took a quick dip. The water was a bit cold but they had fun playing around.

Late in the afternoon we went in to Saranac Lake and walked around a bit. It's amazing how many people stop and want to know all about the Nikon D3 that I have hanging around my neck! We visited a photographer who happened to be from Rush, just south of Rochester. Mark Kurtz. We had a good talk about Holga's and his black and white prints. Very nice stuff!

Then on home to cook dinner on the grill - after relighting the fire enough times to dry out the charcoal and wood - and make smores! Tonight was Hunter's first exposure to zuccini and summer squash. Not her favorite.

Now more Olympics and crash. Tomorrow we'll try to go to Lake Placid. Hopefully the weather cooperates! Wish us luck!

Greeting from Hoel Pond!

Well, we finally made it! We are actually on vacation! My wife, Anne, found this little place on Hoel Pond near Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, NY and it's better than we imagined. Great job, Anne! Not only is the house gorgeous with lots of room for Shannon and her friend, Hunter, to have their own space, but there is a cable modem and WiFi so I am able to keep up and blog, too!

Anne and I went out for a walk after the 5 hour drive to get here, picked the wrong path, walked for about a 1/2 hour before the trail, that we thought would take us back to the road, just ended. So we turned around and walked back the way we came. Really nice walk!

Then we went to Saranac Lake and stopped to pick up some of the best corn on the cob I've had in a long time! Now, we are watching the olympics, working on puzzles, and generally just relaxing. It's been a long time coming...

So here's a few shots from our walk today. Just playing around and having fun. Keep watching!

08-08-08, Joe and Ann Marie

After much wringing of hands and praying for the rain to stop for long enough to hold a wedding, Joe and Ann Marie did it! And in style! The rain stopped. The sun came out. The family showed up. And me, too!

We know Joe and Ann Marie from Stacy and Justin's wedding - along with most of the rest of the family! They are all great people and made me feel welcome and comfortable. Not that it takes me very much to get comfortable but it's nice to be treated as one of the gang!

So, after trying to kill myself by sliding down most of the deck stairs on my 5th point of contact (those of you with Army backgrounds will know what that is - the rest of you can figure it out), we had a great time!

Joe and Ann Marie are a terrific couple with two great kids, Alex and Olivia, who served as Bridesmaid and Best Man for the ceremony. Reverend Kimmel presided, an interesting story in itself as he grew up in the house Joe and Ann Marie live in and lives very close by still!

To top off the whole afternoon it only rained for about ten minutes and we saw and almost complete rainbow! All in all a great day! Congratulations Joe and Ann Marie and many years of great luck!

Aimee's Senior Portraits

Tonight I had the distinct pleasure of Aimee's first Senior Portrait session. She's a great girl, full of smiles and giggles and the camera loves her eyes!

I fell in love with this location after Scott showed it to me the first time. What a great place! It is ever changing - new artists are continually painting over the top of older pieces - so every time you see it it is different! I will definitely be going there more often! Some of the work is pretty raw but others are fantastically detailed and well done.

So, with the sun setting and a slight, sometimes not so slight, breeze blowing, Aimee and I made our way around the lot making these images. I hope you enjoy them!

Thanks, Aimee!

Vacation Weekend

Well, I finally have a weekend off and I'm spending it with friends on Seneca Lake! Every year for the last 5, I think, four couples and kids converge on Diane Brewer's parent's cottage on the lake and we bum around and drink, lounge, read, and watch all the kids grow! It's amazing seeing how fast they change!

So here I sit taking a little break from editing Alexander and Cristin's wedding in between making dinner and taking walks. We want to be finished with the editing and get the images up for On-line proofing by Wednesday - keep your fingers crossed guys!

Here's some cute shots from today. I'm loving this 85 f1.4 lens! Thanks, Anne, for letting me get it!
